Down Area Winter Football League round-up, April 26
The excitement continues to build in the DAWFL Premiership, with Greenwell Star and Moat Park Rangers continuing to battle it out for the title.
With both teams failing to take advantage of each other succumbing to draws midweek, the destination of the trophy remains in the Newtownards men’s hands following their emphatic 8-3 win over Willowfield Parish. James Dickson’s men however will continue pushing to the end, as demonstrated in their 3-2 victory over Sittlington Cup finalists Corrymeela.
Oakfield Breda’s impressive end of season form continued with their 8-1 win over Comber Star, while Vision Athletic defeated Comber Young Men 2-0.
It was party time in Millisle as Abbey Villa III’s secured the final promotion place to the Premiership with a 2-1 win over neighbours Bangor Young Men III’s. An eighteen match unbeaten run proved too much for Newtown Forest to keep up with, despite the Belfast men’s 4-0 win over Ballywalter Rec III’s.
North Down continued to demonstrate why they are champions with a 6-1 win over Ards Rangers III’s, Ballygown defeated Stranmillis 37th OB 5-3 and it was a high five for 43rd OB’s in their victory over Bryansburn Rangers III.
In the remaining ties Bangor Rangers III and Bangor Swifts III recorded wins against Queens Graduates III and Agapé.
Newtown Forest II’s secured fifth position in Division 2a with a draw against Greenwell Star II’s, while Comber Young Men II’s brought their season to an end by sharing the honours with Vision Athletic II’s.
There are likely to be a few sleepless nights in the North Down II’s camp over the next few weeks, with the Newtownards men now sitting only one win away from lifting the Division 2b title after their 3-2 win over 8th OB II’s.
In the remaining ties 82nd II’s, Ballygowan II’s and Castlereagh Colts II’s all recorded victories.
The Frank Moore Memorial semi-finals take place this Wednesday night (30th April) at Billy Neill Playing fields, with both kicking off at 6.30pm. Abbey Villa III’s take on 8th OB’s, while 43rd OB face Bryansburn Rangers III’s
The Mervyn Bassett Cup final take place this Thursday night (1st May) at Parkway Comber, with a 6.30pm kick off. Bryansburn Rangers IV’s face Moat Park Rangers II’s.
