Down Area Winter Football League round-up, December 6
Coming into this weekend, Willowfield Parish had played 14 games, conceded 84 goals and most tellingly recorded zero points.
They were firmly rooted to the bottom of the table and Saturday's opponents, North Down, had recorded a 4-0 victory in their previous meeting. I think you can see where this is going, but I'll continue anyway.
Not many people would have given Robert Warnock's side a chance at the start of play, however, after a hard-fought 90 minutes in the icy conditions of Hydebank Playing Fields, Willowfield emerged with the three points and a 2-1 victory to breath new life into their struggling season. They may have a long way to go if they are to escape the drop, but this win will do wonders for their confidence and may just inspire a revival in the second half of the campaign.
At the other end of the league, Greenwell Star moved level on points with front-runners Brentwood, following their 8-1 win over 8th OB, while Corrymeela missed their opportunity to claim pole position by falling to a 2-0 defeat in their game against Comber YM. In the Premier Division's remaining fixture, Ravenhill YM drew 3-3 with Oakfield Breda, leaving both clubs in the healthy, yet uninspiring, comfort of mid-table.
In Division One, Newtown Forest defeated last-placed Bangor YM III 6-1, Bangor Swifts III were 6-3 winners in their game against Clandeboye YM and Ballygowan weathered some late pressure to come away with a 3-2 win over Bangor Rangers III. Stranmillis 37th OB played out a rare 0-0 with Queen's Graduates III and 43rd OB defeated Ards Rangers III 9-3, to leap-frog their opponents on the table.
With Moat Park II's game at Bryansburn Rangers IV postponed, Greenwell Star II closed the gap at the top of Division Two with a 4-2 win over Corrymeela II, North Down II defeated Brentwood 3-2 at home and 3rd Bangor OB II humbled Vision Athletic II 5-1. Comber YM were 8-1 winners in their game against 43rd OB II and Ravenhill YM II narrowly defeated Newtown Forest II 1-0 at Billy Neill.
First-placed Comber Star II took on second-placed Bangor Rangers IV in Division 2A. The game ended with a 2-1 win for the Comber men but, with only three points separating the two sides, the race for top-spot in the bottom tier is still wide open. With a reduced fixture list in 2A, 8th OB II's 3-2 away win at Bangor YM IV completes another exciting week in the DAWFL.
