Down Area Winter Football League round-up, January 3

The Christmas break has been and gone, the New Year is well underway and on Saturday, the Down Area Winter Football League Premier Division returned with four high-scoring fixtures to kick off the season's run-in.

Brentwood have been favourites for the title since the opening week of the 2014-2015 campaign, and on Saturday, they travelled to North Down to show that they are still the team to beat. The Ards side strolled to a 7-0 victory, showing that the winter break hasn't affected their ability to punish a poor performance from the opposition with an embarrassing score-line.

Greenwell Star seem the side most likely to push Brentwood all the way and they made easy work of Willowfield Parish when the two sides faced off at West Winds Playing Fields. The game ended in a 10-0 home win, a result that shows the massive gulf between the division's top and bottom.

Away from the title race, Comber Star drew 3-3 with 8th OB and Moat Park Rangers drew 1-1 with Oakfield Breda.

In Division One, Bangor Rangers III defeated their local rivals Bangor Swifts III 3-1 to keep the pressure on 3rd Bangor OB at the top of the league, whilst Queen's Graduates III got their promotion push back on track with a 4-1 win over Ards Rangers III. Newtown Forest's fine form continues with their 4-1 win at Agapé, while Bangor YM III pulled off a shock with their 7-1 win over 43rd OB.

In Division 2A, Comber YM II were 5-2 winners in their game with Bryansburn Rangers IV, Corrymeela II drew 1-1 with Moat Park Rangers II and Brentwood II failed to match the heroics of their first team as they lost 8-0 to North Down II. Ravenhill YM II defeated 3rd Bangor OB II 4-0 and Newtown Forest II were comfortable 4-1 winners in their match with 43rd OB II.

As always, we will finish off with the Division 2B round-up. 82nd II travelled home from Bangor with three points after a 2-0 win at Bangor YM IV, Oakfield Breda II defeated Abbey Villa IV 5-2 and 8th OB II drew 2-2 with Queen's Graduates IV. In the final game of the weekend, Division 2B leaders Comber Star II were held 3-3 by Bangor Rangers IV to leave the race for promotion from the bottom tier wide open.
