Arthurs swoops to clinch derby win for Ards

Ards' Niall Currie enjoyed the win over old club Bangor

Bangor 0 Ards 1: Niall Currie returned to Clandeboye Park as Ards manager to claim an important three points off his old team Bangor in a hard fought, but dull north Down derby.

The 1-0 win came courtesy of a Ross Arthurs goal and it lifted Ards into third place. The red and blue men are now five games unbeaten under new boss Currie.

The goal came as early as the third minute when Arthurs got onto the end of a Ryan Berry through ball.

The perfectly weighted pass put Arthurs one-on-one with teenage goalkeeper Dean Justin, but Arthurs’ calm finish left him with no chance.

The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair with Ards giving away numerous free-kicks.

Bangor's best chance of the half fell to Ben Browne, in the penalty box, but Graeme McKibbin was equal to Browne's effort, flicking it over the bar.

Ards’ Gary Spence almost made it 2-0 when he hit the bar.

Centre-half Spence headed Berry's accurate corner off the woodwork and former Ards left-back Mark McQuillan was unlucky not to equalise for Bangor.

In the second-half McQuillan hit the top of the bar with a 30 yard pile driver. Mark Picking almost scored, but he put his 30-yard effort over the bar, with the net unguarded.

Andy Morrow almost got an 81st minute equaliser for Bangor when McKibbin dropped a cross, but Spence was quick to clear off the line.

Bangor failed to put Ards under much pressure in the closing minutes and Currie's men held on for a win that was just about deserved, although both teams are capable of better.
