Meeting set up to sort out Oval farce
Wednesday, 13 December 2006
East Belfast councillors will meet with senior police officers this afternoon in a fresh attempt to secure a green light for Saturday's Premier League game between Cliftonville and Glentoran at the Oval.
Glentoran chiefs are disappointed at the PSNI's decision to re-categorise the game from a Category 'B' to a Category 'C' (high risk) game.
Health and Safety officials also wanted the match to be all-ticket with a 1pm kick-off.
Glentoran director Jim Rodgers said: "There will be a meeting today at 4pm in east Belfast involving councillors and senior police officers.
"Belfast City Council Health and safety officials will also be meeting to try and reach a solution. We are hopeful an agreement can be reached."
Oval bosses held a two-hour meeting with police and health and safety officials yesterday but more discussions are needed.
A club spokesperson said: "The Belfast City Council Health & Safety officials opposed the idea of ticketing only one side of the ground.
"This however has been practised at Solitude for years.
"Glentoran FC are keen to take and digest all the advice given and are conscious that we as Directors have a duty of care to all that come to the Oval. We are still working hard to try and resolve the situation, and are asking the PSNI to re-classify the game or make us aware of the intelligence that they used in re-grading this particular game. Glentoran FC would also like to thank those councillors who had supported the club at the meeting."
Meanwhile, last night, Cliftonville defeated Newry City by two goals to one at the Marshes. Eddie Patterson's side now share third position in the Carnegie Premier League with Linfield.
