Morgan stays at Oval - for now

Glentoran's Chris Morgan today revealed that he is staying at the Oval until the end of the season after clear the air talks with manager Paul Millar.

Morgan was expected to leave the east Belfast club with a likely destination being Newry City - he also had talks with Glenavon - however the former Linfield forward has decided to fight for his place before determining his future in the summer despite admitting that he felt that he was being ushered out the Oval door.

The form of Gary Hamilton and Michael Halliday had meant that a starting place up front was difficult for Morgan to nail down, and in the past few months he has been playing in behind the front two giving him fewer chances in front of goal.

It was the lack of action in his preferred role that caused a number of clubs to express an interest in the striker.

But in a remarkable turnaround Morgan, having spoken to Millar, who offered him assurances that he was still in his first team plans, will remain a Glentoran player, at least until the season ends.

Morgan told The Belfast Telegraph: "I felt that I was being pushed out a bit and was being forced to make a decision very quickly.

"I didn't want to rush into it and then maybe a couple of weeks down the line regret whatever choice I made.

"I had until tomorrow night to come up with a decision before the transfer window closed and that was something that I felt I wasn't able to do.

"If I am honest I probably only have one move left before I wrap it up so what I do next is going to be very important.

"For me, as has always been the case, my best option was to stay at Glentoran and push for a regular place in the team again. I didn't want to leave and at times it looked as though the decision was being taken out of my hands.

"But I spoke to 'Windy' (Millar) last night and told him that unless his plans are to dump me in the reserves for the rest of the season, then I want to stay and then take things from there. He said he wanted me to stay and that's what I wanted to hear.

"I told Windy that I still believe that I can get into the team and maybe score 10 or 15 goals and he was happy with that."

Morgan adds that he would love to stay at the Oval beyond the summer but admits it is unlikely.

Meanwhile Millar is to make a last ditch raid on his old club Newry to try and take Damien Curran and possibly Richard Clarke to the Oval to help resurrect their season.

The Glens, in awful form at present, were knocked off the top of the table on Saturday after losing 3-1 to Lisburn Distillery.
