We can shock Blues: Fay

Dungannon Swifts manager Harry Fay last night insisted that his team can beat Linfield in this afternoon's JJB Sports Irish Cup final, no matter how well the Blues play.

The odds are stacked against Dungannon pulling off what would be considered a shock with David Jeffrey's Premier League champions 1-3 to complete back-to-back league and cup doubles, with the Swifts at 6-1 to win their first major honour.

Fay, however, knows his team possess enough quality to win the game.

"We don't need Linfield to have an off-day to have a chance of beating them," said Fay.

"If we play to our optimum then we can win it.

"I know my own players and I know the quality that exists in the squad.

"There are a lot of teams in the league who need Linfield to have an off-day if they want to beat them, but we aren't one of them.

"I have no doubt that if we are at our best then we'll be walking off the pitch with the Irish Cup."

The Swifts have never beaten Linfield in a competitive game, but they have come away from Windsor Park unbeaten in their last two league visits to the international stadium.

"It's a results business and we are there to win," added Fay.

"There is no point in looking well in a nice new suit and finishing up with people patting you on the back and saying that you played well if you don't take the cup home with you.

"We need to play well, but I would take a bad performance and a 1-0 win right now.

"I am confident, I just hope that it isn't false confidence, but we will find that out by five o'clock."

TODAY'S game has an earlier than usual kick-off at 2.45pm and will be played to a finish with extra-time and penalties if required.
