Big clubs to run rule over Donegal Celtic’s Caldwell

By Alex McGreevy
Monday, 7 July 2008

West Brom, Ipswich, Blackburn and Celtic are set to run the eye over young Donegal Celtic player Ciaran Caldwell this month.

The St Mary's pupil, who made his debut for Celtic at the end of last season and was in his school's U18 Carnegie Cup-winning side, has been handed a trial with Premiership newcomers West Brom.

He will begin his trial with the West Midlands club tomorrow and will spend a week there before taking up a second trial with Blackburn Rovers in late August.

But Ipswich manager Jim Magilton has requested Caldwell, a grandson of boxing legend Johnny Caldwell, plays against his Championship side for Donegal Celtic in a pre-season friendly later this month.

Celtic will also look at the versatile teenager during his club's pre-season games. He has played in defence for the Irish League club but plays as a striker at school level.
