Ballymena United mourn passing of Dave Hickson

Ballymena United have expressed their sadness following the death of Dave Hickson.

The legendary Everton centre-forward, who was a player-manager at the Ballymena Showgrounds, has passed away, aged 83.

Hickson was an iconic figure at Goodison Park but was also one of the few players to turn out for both Liverpool and Tranmere Rovers.

Known as 'The Cannonball Kid', he enjoyed his time on Warden Street in the 1964-65 season alongside trainer Billy McCread.

A Sky Blues spokesman said on Twitter: "Ballymena United are saddened to learn of the death of former United player-manager Dave Hickson.

"The ex Everton and Liverpool legend was 83."

UTV journalist Ken Reid said: "A few years ago at Goodison, I asked him about his time at Ballymena. He loved it."
