Ballymena Utd 0 Lisburn Distillery 1

Gary Thompson’s 56th minute strike at the Showgrounds was enough for Lisburn Distillery to leapfrog Ballymena United into fifth spot in the table.

The Whites midfielder’s goal was just reward for Tommy Wright’s side as they dominated the first period with only United keeper Dwayne Nelson keeping the visitors at bay.

He saved from Gary Browne in the eight and 19th minutes — the second a stunning effort with Gary Liggett’s rebound ruled out for offside — and then came out to block Thompson.

Eamonn Murray went close on a couple of occasions for Roy Walker’s men, skimming the crossbar before the break but they offered little else.

Nelson was finally beaten 11 minutes into the second-half when Gary Haveron was robbed by Andrew Kilmartin and when he was denied by Nelson, Thompson knocked home the rebound from close range.

United pressed for an equaliser with Nathan Hanley’s free-kick nestling on top of the net, Gary McCutcheon heading wide and Richard Gibson going close too, while in the dying seconds big central defender Denver Gage nodded wide with the goal at his mercy.
