Big Two in the gutter again
Friday, 26 December 2008
Linfield chairman Jim Kerr insists every step was taken to prevent crowd trouble in the Big Two clash yesterday— before admitting not every spectator can be searched before entering the ground.
Kerr also asked why the PSNI took so long to get to the flashpoint. Up to 50 idiotic so-called supporters hurled coins, bottles, fireworks and seats at rival fans as well as onto the pitch before riot police restored calm after a delay of seven minutes during Linfield’s 3-0 win.
“We can’t search everyone going into the ground or the match would never kick-off,” said Kerr.
“The security firm has to be selective in who they search and minors are not allowed to be searched and they can carry in what they like. I asked why it took the police so long to get there as
they were already outside but was told it takes 10 minutes to get their riot gear on. I do want to compliment the security team though because they stopped people getting onto the pitch and did what they could before the police took over.”
Victorious Blues boss David Jeffrey added: “People will always attach themselves to clubs for big games and never be seen again,” said Jeffrey.
“I do have sympathy for all the genuine Glenmen. When the riot police came in you could see the people throwing bottles and seats weren’t so big and strong then as they ran away as soon as the PSNI came in.”
Referee David Malcolm, who was forced off with an injury at half-time, paid tribute to his replacement’s handling of the incidents.
He said: “Michael McLaughlin did very well under pressure and kept the players on the pitch. A lesser referee would have taken them off and that would have caused a bigger problem.”
The Irish FA will now launch an investigation into the ugly scenes.
