Coleraine manager Platt shows Shields the door after no-show

Friday, 14 November 2008

Former Sheffield Wednesday trainee David McClements is close to signing for hometown club Coleraine after Showgrounds manager David Platt placed midfielder Tony Shields on the transfer list.

The Bannsiders have suspended the 28-year-old and it looks certain that he has played his last game for the club.

McClements has been training at the Showgrounds and if his registration can be sorted out in time there is a chance he could make his debut away to Glenavon on Saturday.

The move to suspend and transfer list Shield’s (pictured) comes after his failure to report for last Saturday's home game against Institute.

The decision to suspended him came following a Showgrounds management committee meeting and it was confirmed by manager Platt last night.

"I am very disappointed by Tony's behaviour,” said Platt.

“I thought he had turned a corner after we had invested a lot of time on him in recent weeks."

Shields failed to show up for Saturday's Premiership clash forcing Platt to alter his selection plans close to kick-off and it is understood it was not the first time he has left the club in the lurch.

Shields, who joined Coleraine from Finn Harps in the summer after previous spells with Derry City, Limavady United, Aldershot and Peterborough United, will have to wait until the transfer window opens in January before he can leave the club.

The developments surrounding Shields are in contrast to six weeks ago when he scored in the derby game against Ballymena United to secure a draw.

McClements started his career at Manchester City before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday, where he made a single first-team appearance as a substitute when aged just 17.

He was released by Wednesday in the summer and has spent the last five months looking for a new club.

Platt’s men head to Mourneview on Saturday placed third in the Premiership table.

Thierry Henry's confession leaves revolting taste

The Republic of Ireland is entitled to believe it has never seen anything so cynical, so far removed from the spirit of sport, as the devilish hand played by Thierry Henry to deny Giovanni Trapattoni's team a place in the World Cup finals that would have been so thoroughly deserved.

Wenger’s way a lesson to all of us

Arsenal are scoring goals galore at the moment. Not exactly what everyone was hoping for at Sunderland ahead of our Premier League game with them tomorrow.
