Crawford leaves Ards feeling down on luck

Tommy Kincaid’s Ards side fell to their second defeat in a row against a lively Ballinamallard United in Co-op League Cup.

The Mallards scored two impressive first half goals through former Linfield man Andy Crawford. His first came in the 32nd minute when he headed home a Dwayne McManus cross but it was his second strike that really stunned the favourites.

Pat McCallister’s Donegal Celtic are surely into the third round of the competition after they hammered a poor Armagh City 3-0 at Holm Park with two goals from the inform Stephen O’Neill and a late strike from Tomas McCann.

Larne are also almost certainly in the hat with the big boys after they took a youthful Banbridge Town apart in their own back yard. The excellent Davy Larmour hit a hat trick with Bertie Fulton and Adam Dick getting one a piece. In tightest game of the day Limavady United piped Carrick Rangers 1-0 at Taylor’s Avenue with a goal from Davy Patton.

In the last sixteen of the Paddy Power Steel & Son’s Cup Linfield Swifts defeated Shankill United 5-2 in the most exciting tie of the round. Fellow Reserve League side Cliftonville Olympic had no such joy, losing out 3-1 to Rathfern in extra time.

The Welders booked their place in the quarter-finals by beating local rivals Knockbreda 3-2. In the big derby of the round Kilmore Rec surprised Killyleagh by claiming an impressive 2-0 win against the one time cup specialists.

Downpatrick are still in with a chance of making it to Seaview on Christmas morning, beating Newington 2-0. The other three fourth round ties will take place next Saturday.

The Ladbrokes.com Championship Two League Cup was also on the fixture list this weekend in what was a busy day of cup action.

Dergview defeated Tobermore United on penalties to claim their place in the Semi Finals where they will be joined by Dundela and Annagh United who dispatched of Chimney Corner and and Lurgan Celtic respectively.
