Cunningham out to kill off Institute

John Cunningham is aiming to leave his old club broken-hearted on Valentine's Day when Dungannon Swifts face Institute in the fifth round of the JJB Sports Irish Cup.

The romance of the cup has thrown up a typically intriguing clash which pits Cunningham against Institute, the club which he served as both player and assistant manager.

With a place in the quarter-finals of the country’s premier knockout competition at stake, there will be no love lost in this all-Premiership tie.

“It is a cup match and the Irish Cup is always a special event,” said Cunningham. “The cup is always a very good occasion for players and the football club, especially if you can get a good run in the competition, and we’re looking forward to it.

“During my playing career I got to the semi-finals with Bangor while I was also involved in the Derry City sides which reached the FAI Cup final, so it would be nice to get back to another final with Dungannon.”
