Dean Fitzgerald is mobbed by Glentoran team-mates after his late winner at Bangor

Two away wins in a week have got Glentoran’s title challenge back on track.

Away wins against Cliftonville and Bangor have put the east-Belfast men a point off the top of the table after Linfield’s defeat against Glenavon, but manager Alan McDonald says he isn't worried about how his rivals fare.

His only priority, as he says, is how his own team perform.

“I can't control what happens at other clubs. I think I have more than enough to concern me looking after Glentoran,” said McDonald.

“ We know that we have to make sure that we continue to perform well and win matches and if we do that, then we will come out on top.

“We had a tough game against a Bangor team which has surprised everyone this season and Marty Quinn deserves a lot of credit for the side which he has put together.

“Bangor made us fight all the way, and when they took the lead after 19 minutes, we knew that we had a game on our hands.

“We had started poorly and it was only after Bangor scored that we started to get our game together. We grabbed an equaliser through a great Gary Hamilton strike just before the break and I thought we forced the pace in the second- half, with Bangor looking to hit us on the break.

“Bangor keeper Andrew Plummer brought off some superb saves when we were pressing hard for the winner and then Marty Verner kicked a Gary Hamilton corner off the line. For all our good work it looked as if we would have to settle for a draw.

“Then we got the break right at the death and Dean Fitzgerald got his toe to a Hamilton corner to send the ball into the net with less than ninety seconds on the watch and we got the win we came for.”

Bangor had deservedly opened the scoring after 19 minutes when David Irvine rose unchallenged to glance a free kick from Jim McMenamin past a Elliott Morris from ten yards, and the Seasiders celebrated their first goal in five matches.

Glentoran reacted by piling forward in attack, but a gritty home defence had the measure of their opponents up until a bit of magic from saw Shane McCabe pass quick as a wink to Daryl Fordyce on the edge of the box, he slipped the ball to Hamilton and he gave Plummer no chance with a rocket of a shot which rose into the top left hand corner of the net.

Then it was frustration time for Glentoran with Plummer seemingly the equal of anything the visitors could muster — right up until that last minute winner from Fitzgerald.

Don't know who wrote this report but some of it is pure fiction.

" A bit of magic from Shane McCabe saw him pass quick as a wink to Daryl Fordyce on the edge of the box, he slipped the ball to Hamilton and he gave Plummer no chance with a rocket of a shot which rose into the top left hand corner of the net".

The reality. Michael Halliday tried a fortuitous backheel on the edge of the box. The ball looped up into the air and was headed across the eighteen yard box by a Bangor defender. Gary Hamilton anticipated the dropping ball and met it on the half volley to give Plummer no chance with a rocket of a shot which rose into the top left hand corner of the net.

I'm all for creative journalism but a wee bit of substance is also required.
