Leaders Sligo Rovers don’t play St Patrick’s Athletic until tomorrow evening while second place Shamrock Rovers, just a point ahead of Derry in third, kick off against Bray at 8pm.
Derry go into the game on the back of a three-match winning streak — including the thrilling win over Rovers at the Brandywell a couple of weeks ago — and the chance to top the table, even for a few minutes, is spurring them on.
“Three wins in a row have given the whole squad a great lift,” said manager Stephen Kenny. “So we go into this game full of optimism.
“Knowing that we can go top of the league, if even only for a short period, gives us that extra incentive.
“You have still to respect Dundalk, who have a lot of good attacking players with real pace.They can hurt you and I am expecting an open sort of game with chances at both ends.
“But we are on a good, unbeaten run and we intend to keep that going as long as we possibly can.”
Skipper Kevin Deery is hoping to make his comeback but there is a doubt over the fitness of centre half Shane McEleney.
