Derry City have launched an audacious bid to lure Airtricity League leading scorer Gary Twigg to the Brandywell next season.
The striker, who has 15 goals in the League of Ireland Premier Division this season, is out of contract at Shamrock Rovers at the end of the year.
And the Scot has said he is interested in a move north of the border arousing interest at Linfield and Glentoran as well.
Since joining Rovers from Brechin City three years ago, 28-year-old Twigg has netted 70 goals in less than 100 appearances for the Hoops — and his goals were the driving force behind two successive league titles.
Derry boss Declan Devine is still keen to enlarge his squad for next year after seeing his side struggle with one injury after another this season.
Conor Murphy, Marc Brolly and Matthew Rooney all joined the club during the summer transfer window, but all three lack experience.
Sligo Rovers’ bid to lure Mark Farren away from the Brandywell failed this week — the striker could not agree terms after being offered an 18-month deal.
And Devine says he can still play a huge role for Derry this season.
“I’m happy he has stayed because he is a proven goalscorer,” he said.
- Ballymena United midfielder Alan Davidson has agreed a one-year deal, keeping him at the Showgrounds.
