Derry City set for semi-final against Galway

Derry City travel to Galway United in the FAI Ford Cup semi-final tomorrow with duo Thomas Stewart and Eddie McCallion both doubtful.

McCallion who picked up a calf injury at Bohemians last week, but more worryingly for the ex-Linfield man he picked up a serious shin injury during training this week.

“Eddie strained his calf during last week’s game against Bohemians and had to be substituted. He’s made progress since last Friday night but he has to be considered extremely doubtful to play against Galway," confirmed boss Stephen Kenny.

“Thomas was involved in a clash with Mark McChrystal during Wednesday’s training session. He had an X-ray in Altnagelvin Hospital which confirmed that nothing has been broken, but he’s also in doubt with a shin problem and is unlikely to be involved at this stage.”

The Brandywell men will go into the tie as favourites, however the Dubliner isn't taking anything for granted against an in-form United side.

“Galway have gone on a great run. They remain undefeated in eight matches in all competitions so we’ll really have to be on our guard,” Kenny added.

“Many pundits had them relegated weeks ago but, since then, they’ve defeated both Cork City and St. Pat’s and hammered Bray 4-0, so they’re in great form at the moment.

“We’ve been told they are expecting their biggest crowd of the season for Sunday’s game, so we’ll be up against it but I think we’ve developed a capacity to deal with such situations as we showed at Turner’s Cross against Cork City in the quarter-final game.

“Many observers didn’t see us getting through the quarter-final but we progressed after a replay and while the motivation is high given that the FAI Cup final will be at the RDS, I have every belief in my playing staff.

"While we never claimed to be the finished article this season, we’ve put in quite a few highly impressive performances and, in my view, it would be fitting for both my players and our supporters that we reach the final.

“We’ve already won the League Cup, which was great, but we’re in the FAI Cup semi-final on merit but we must earn our place in the final with a good result in Galway and nothing will come easy at Terryland Park."

The Candystripes have had some impressive victories on the run this season, beating the likes of champions Bohemians, St Patrick's Athletic twice and have already beat Jeff Kenna's men on two separate occasions at Terryland Park, but Kenny is still wary of the Tribesmen.

"We have had some terrific results away from home this season and although we have beaten Galway twice at their place, the League Cup game was very difficult.

"In fact I don't know how they are just above the relegation zone because they are a very good side."

Former Derry midfielder Alan Murphy, along with ex-Institute winger Iarfhlaith O’Dabhorain, John Fitzgerald, John Russell and Marc McCulloch all miss out for Galway, but Kenny is only worried about his side.

“Although they are missing a few players, they won on Monday night without one of their better players in Jay O’Shea, but regardless who they have on we only need to concentrate on ourselves.”
