Europa League: Under-strength Glentoran bow out

FK Vorskla 3 Glentoran 0 (Vorskia won 5-0 on aggregate): Glentoran’s summer European adventure is over.

Their continental forays came to an end in Ukraine last night as Scott Young’s youthful side went down 3-0 to Vorskla Poltava, bowing out 5-0 on aggregate.

They can, however, reflect on their run with some pleasure, having beaten Macedonian side Renova two weeks ago.

With experienced players such as Colin Nixon, Sean Ward Aidan O’Kane, Richard Clarke, Ciaran Martyn and Andy Waterworth all missing, Young started with three teenagers in the team, with an average age of less than 23-and-a-half, so the Glens were always going to be up against it.

“Realistically we were never going to win the game, but we didn’t let ourselves or the Irish League down,” said Glens boss Scott Young. “They are an excellent side and we were without half a dozen players.”

They suffered much the same fate as that which ended the European involvement of their Big Two rivals Linfield earlier in the week, conceding two goals in the space of three minutes and there was no way back after that.

Elliott Morris had just pulled off a fine double save from Ivan Krivosheienko and Ahmed Januzi when Vorskla took the lead on 33 minutes.

Januzi latched onto a cross from the left and after his initial shot on the turn was blocked he lashed the rebound into the middle of the goal as the wrong-footed Morris dived to his right.

The second, on 36 minutes, came from a corner on the right. This time Januzi saw his header bounce onto the far post before Oleksiy Kurilov nodded home the rebound.

Those goals knocked the stuffing out of the Glens, who had caused some problems through the tricky Jim O’Hanlon.

The dangerous Januzi — who also scored in last week’s first leg — wrapped up the game 17 minutes from time.

Krivosheienko and Armend Dallku combined on the right and the unmarked Januzi headed home from close range.
