Farren backed to fire Derry City’s revival

Derry City manager Stephen Kenny is backing his misfiring team to start banging in the goals sooner rather than later.

But the Brandywell boss is leaving nothing to chance and had had his side in for extra shooting sessions during training.

Whether it pays dividends or not will be seen tonight when City play host to Athlone Town as they try to get their Airtricity First Division title charge back on track.

“We haven't been as prolific, but we are capable of getting back there again, so we just have to believe in ourselves,” explained Kenny.

“We did an extra session on Tuesday, but we do that quite often. In fact Mark Farren always demands that and he's the one that sets the standards.”

Kenny welcomes back trio Mark McChrystal, David McDaid and Shane McEleney for the clash, but teenage midfielder Thomas McBride is likely to be missing for a number of weeks with ankle ligament damage, while fellow midfielder's Kevin Deery and Ruairi Harkin are also out of this evening's clash.

Deery had knee surgery on Wednesday and is expected to be out for at least six weeks, while Barry Molloy and Patrick McEleney are also doubtful .

Despite the problems, the Dubliner is looking to get back to winning ways after last week’s reversal to Waterford.

“We have the capabilities to do that, so we have to believe in ourselves and pick it up,” he said. “We didn't want to lose last week, but we are still in a good position.”
