Foyle Cup: Stars sparkle as Candystripes win local derbyI

Irish sides burst out of the blocks and set the pace against their more illustrious foreign opponents as the 2010 Foyle Cup kicked off last night.

Local outfit Oxford United Stars took advantage of the fact their opponents from Morecambe had been travelling as they dominated their game before running out 4-2 victors.

They now take pole position in Group A with Ballymoor and Arklow sharing a four-goal thriller in Oakland Park.

Ballinamallard impressively led Barcelona-based side CET 1-0 for half the game following a well worked early goal from Danny Dunbar but a second half penalty from Central Hector left the score 1-1.

Ballinamallard had chances to win but had to rely on a man of the match performance from their 16 year old goalkeeper Nathan Wallace to earn a share of the spoils.

Elsewhere in one of the stand-out ties, a local derby saw Derry City defeated county counterparts Coleraine, 2-1 at the Brandywell.

There were also victories for Institute, Finn Harps, Lisburn Distillery and Loughgall.

Play continues today, after the official opening when hundreds of competitors will make their way around Londonderry in the annual Foyle Cup parade.

Foyle Cup under-19 results: Arklow Town 2-2 Ballymoor Colts; Morecambe FC 2-4 Oxford United Stars; Coleraine 1-2 Derry City; Letterkenny Rovers 1-3 Lisburn Distillery; Ballinamallard 1-1 CET Barcelona; Institute 3-1 Larne; Finn Harps 2-1 Inishowen; Loughgall United 3-1 Morecambe Colts.
