Gary Hamilton wants to boss Glenavon

Gary Hamilton has admitted he would be interested in becoming a player-manager at Glenavon — if the Lurgan Blues and Glentoran came to an agreement.

The five-times capped Northern Ireland international is keen to purse a managerial career and the vacancy at his boyhood club has captured his imagination.

However, the 31-year-old has six months remaining on his Glentoran contract and the east Belfast side would need to give the green light for such a move.

Hamilton has an A Licence coaching badge, though he doesn’t possess the Pro-Licence qualifcation.

“I am under contract to Glentoran and I will not be disrespectful to them,” said the former Portadown striker.

“It’s also well known that I have followed Glenavon all my life, been fortunate enough to play for them and any management role there might appeal to me.

“Nothing would ever happen unless Glenavon approached Glentoran and some agreement was reached.

“As I’m still 31 it would be a player-manager role but management is always something I’ve been determined to have a go at.

“I’ve been gearing up to being a manager since doing my coaching badges when I was 25.”

Former Larne and Carrick Rangers manager Graham McConnell would like a crack at the Glenavon job.

McConnell, who is currently calling the shots at Amateur League side Newington Rangers, says he has “hungered for this type of challenge” since departing Larne in 2008.
