Fuming Glenavon manager Stephen McBride is demanding a vast improvement from his players after branding their performance against Institute on Tuesday night as, ‘gutless, cowardly and inept.’
The Drumahoe men moved two points ahead of Glenavon in the IFA Premiership table after that result and only early-season strugglers Dungannon Swifts and Ballymena United are now below the Lurgan Blues.
“The performance against Institute was not acceptable” said McBride, who will now ask his men to put things right against Newry City tomorrow.
“The good thing is that the players have taken that on-board and they have now got to right the wrongs on Saturday.
“How they played was no reflection on our pre-match preparation and how they were asked to play.
“We went over our own game-plan, what they would do and once the players go out over the white line they have to take the responsibility on themselves.”
Although it is derby weekend elsewhere in the country, Portadown’s demotion into the Championship means no local pride at stake at Mourneview.
“I have never, even as a player, looked upon Newry as a derby for us,” said McBride.
