Glenavon have closed a stand at Mourneview Park in an attempt to boot violence into touch.

The club has decided to shut the Crescent Stand in the hope of avoiding a repeat of the scenes that marred the Boxing Day battle with Portadown and the Irish Cup clash between the sides earlier this month.

The decision was taken by the club’s board and safety officer and backed by Craigavon Borough Council.

A Glenavon statement read: “The irresponsible actions of a small number of people frequenting the Crescent Stand are jeopardising our status as an IFA Premiership club by repeatedly breaching the terms of our Domestic Licence issued by the Irish Football Association and our Safety Certificate issued by Craigavon Borough Council.

“Despite repeated warnings, these individuals appear determined to land the club in trouble with the authorities.

“This situation clearly cannot be allowed to happen and unfortunately the financial cost of providing security and safety to our supporters and safety stewards within the Crescent Stand has become disproportionate to the benefits of the stand remaining open.

“In addition club officials will be meeting with senior police officers from the Lurgan area this week to discuss the police investigations into Boxing Day and on Saturday 14 January.”

Meanwhile, Glenavon have terminated Kevin Kelbie’s contract following discussions with the player.

The Scotland-based striker signed a two-year agreement with Glenavon last May following his release from Morton but he only made 13 starts and six substitute appearances this season.
