Glentoran victory ‘showed fighting spirit’

Glentoran manager Scott Young claimed that the club's off-the-field financial difficulties won't affect his players after they walked off with the first trophy of the season.

The Glens lifted the Paddy Power County Antrim Shield after a 3-1 victory over Linfield at Windsor Park to give fans some respite, with a cash crisis threatening their club's very existence.

Payment of a tax bill believed to be in the region of £250,000 has been demanded. If, however, they can fight off a winding-up order issued by the Inland Revenue as successfully as they battled the Blues last night then there will be nothing to worry about.

“There are so many people doing so much hard work around this club,” said Young.

“The Spirit of '41, the Glentoran Community Trust, the Glentoran Foundation, supporters clubs and other people are putting in tremendous efforts for the club they love and all I've wanted to do since I became manager was make them proud. This result will give everyone a huge lift.

“There is a lot of negativity about the club, but we can't be thinking about that and the players aren't thinking about it, otherwise they wouldn't give the kind of performances they have.

“The team spirit is as good as any that I've seen and when fans see the players fighting for the cause the way they did, they are very proud of their team.”

He added: “They can go home very happy and proud — and that's what I want to do.”
