Mr Versatile Vinny Sweeney is hoping he can finally get his first goal for his home town club when Derry City host old rivals Finn Harps tonight in the EA Sports Cup.
The former Cliftonville man (below), who has been used in a number of positions already this season, is likely to start this evening as boss Stephen Kenny is expected to make a number of changes.
“I’m sure Stephen will have to use a bit of the squad and I know it isn’t a massive squad, but there is lots of quality in it,” said Sweeney.
“I’m looking forward to the game, because we have a good record against Harps and we don’t want to be losing that especially at the Brandywell.”
The 29-year-old believes that Derry’s young squad is ready for whatever is thrown at them this campaign and he accepts that he may have to sit on the substitutes’ bench for a good period of the season.
“We produced a massive performance to win at Monaghan on Friday night. We knew it was always going to be tough; it shows people that we have character in the team and we are all going to dig in and are all ready for this challenge.
“It has been tough for me as a senior player watching the games, but I have no complains because I have already said these is where I want to be and I’m up for the challenge.”
Sweeney also signalled out keeper Gerard Doherty’s performance at Monaghan.
“Gerard’s save at the end just summed him up, he has been outstanding for us this season and I don’t think he gets enough credit, the back four were also super on Friday night; it’s another clean-sheet and winning is a good habit,” said the former Ballymena United striker.
The Candystripes have injury doubts over Doherty, Mark McChrystal, Eddie McCallion and Ruairi Harkin, while the likes of Shane McEleney, Darren Cassidy, Thomas McBride and Adam Clark are all also likely to start this evening.
As for Harps they go into the cup tie having lost their last two league outings and they will be looking for some revenge after losing 2-0 at the Brandywell in the Airtricity League First Division last Tuesday night.
