Healy hails Ryan as a star of the future

Northern Ireland star David Healy has sent his congratulations to Newry teenager Ryan McGivern for helping Manchester City win the Youth Cup.

City claimed the glory by beating Chelsea 3-1 in the second leg of the final on Wednesday night, giving them a 4-2 aggregate success.

Northern Ireland record goalscorer Healy said: "I'd like to congratulate Ryan McGivern.

"I know the City coach Steve Eyre and phoned him before the final and told him to tell Ryan to have a good game.

"I'm not sure it worked, because Ryan scored an own goal early on, but he showed great character to fight back and played really well to help City win the trophy.

"Ryan is a left-back with tremendous potential. He scored a couple of goals in the semi-finals, so clearly he can attack as well as defend.

"Winning the Youth Cup is brilliant for any young lad and for Ryan hopefully it will be the start of much success in the game."
