Liffeys all at sea as Derry cruise it

Derry City 2 Liffeys Pearse 0

Kevin Deery (centre) celebrates scoring the opening goal against Liffey's Pearse last night

Derry City eased into the next round of the Ford FAI Cup following a comfortable 2-0 success over Liffeys Pearse last night.

Goals in each half from Kevin Deery and Mark Farren were enough for Stephen Kenny's men to go into the mid-season break with a victory under their belts.

Derry City got off to the perfect start in their quest to win another FAI Cup when they took the lead against the non-league side inside just 58 seconds.

Striker Connor Salmon played the ball back to Kevin Deery and the talented midfielder, who gets married today, let fly from 20-yards and struck Brian Whelan's right-hand post, with the keeper standing like a statue as the ball found the net.

Derry should have built on this great start and missed a super chance three minutes later when Ciaran Martyn sent Salmon clear. With only Whelan to beat the striker saw his close range effort saved by the on-rushing keeper.

A Deery free-kick in the 16th minute found Mark McChrystal, but his header from six yards failed to hit the target.

Credit to the Dublin amateurs, they never gave up and should have levelled things on the stroke of half time when striker James Bradshaw broke the off-side trap, but with Gerard Doherty to beat he blasted wide of the target.

The home side should have increased their lead early in the second-half.

Deery's in-swinging corner found the Barry Molloy, but his header at the near post flew well wide of Whelan's goal.

In a disappointing second-half Derry should have doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when another Deery corner found McChrystal, but his close range header was turned onto the bar by Whelan and Mark Farren failed to turn the rebound home.

Six minutes from time City booked their place in the next round when substitute Farren made no mistake.

Midfielder Ciaran Martyn produced a traditional lung-bursting run before playing a clever through ball to the Letterkenny man and with his weaker right foot he blasted home from the edge of the area.
