Lisburn Distillery 0 Portadown 2

Monday, 6 February 2012

Portadown kept in touch at the top of the Carling Premiership with a 2-0 win over Lisburn Distillery which boss Ronnie McFall, despite seeing youngster Matthew Paget stretchered off, was more than happy with.

“I don't think that, over the 90 minutes, our keeper David Miskelly was really troubled,” said McFall.

“The important thing was we were patient, we just bided our time and we knew the game would just open up a bit, that's what happened.

“The second goal was probably a bit fortunate and, once it went in, that was the game over.

“You make your own luck in this game. The players worked really hard, we made our own luck and I thought we ran out worthy winners.”

Garry Breen’s 22nd minute header set the visitors on their way and the points were secured when the unfortunate Philip Simpson diverted Andrew Burns’ cross into the back of his own net.

Distillery were never out of the game but, equally, they didn't look like coming back into it with their cutting edge of recent weeks sadly lacking.

“I don't think we created enough today, we didn’t work their keeper,” was how disappointed boss John Cunningham summed it up.

“I think there were a few players off their game today — the attacking players in the team today didn't do enough to make things happen and that has been a big strength of ours in the last few weeks in terms of our goal threat and creativity.

“The creative players in the team today didn't do enough and I told them that at the end — they have to do better, especially against the better teams.”

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
