David McCreery has emerged as a surprise contender for the Glentoran manager’s job.

The former Northern Ireland and Newcastle United favourite is considering putting his name forward for the Oval post.

Glentoran are searching for a new boss after Scott Young quit at the weekend.

The east Belfast side, who are staring down the barrel of a trophyless season, now need a steady hand to guide them out of a crisis.

While former Irish League bosses Roy Walker, Marty Quinn, Eddie Patterson and Paul Kirk are being linked with the job, McCreery’s interest in the Glens could lead club chiefs from the east... to the Far East.

That’s because McCreery is currently technical director of South East Asia side Myanmar.

McCreery, who won 67 Northern Ireland caps and was part of the legendary 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals squads, is from east Belfast and is sorry to see his boyhood club hit troubled times.

Glens fans have been contacting the 54-year-old on Twitter, urging him to stop the Oval ship from sinking.

And it’s clear that the Manchester United FA Cup winner wants to see the Cock ‘n’ Hens rise from the ashes.

When asked if he would apply for the job, McCreery tweeted: “We shall see! Keen to return home but got to be right.”

And he added: “Club close to my heart + keen to see them back up the table where they belong.”

McCreery’s cv includes extensive coaching experience around Europe, with the MLS in the USA and Boca Juniors in South America.

He had spells at Carlisle and Hartlepool and could boast an impressive list of contacts.

McCreery joined Hartlepool United before becoming manager of Carlisle United, leading the Cumbrians to a Third Division play-off place.

Following a spell as manager at Hartlepool, he headed back across the Atlantic to help develop the MLS league.

Meanwhile, in last night’s Mid-Ulster Cup semi-final, holders Glenavon ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over Dungannon Swifts at Stangmore Park.
