Morrow is out of Euro challenge
Saturday, 25 July 2009
Derry City get back to the bread and butter of the League of Ireland Premier Division when they entertain third place Cork City, tomorrow night (7pm).
Unfortunately following their midweek Europa League success over Skonto Riga the Brandywell men's injury list has increased.
With the likes of Liam Kearney, Mark McChrystal and Stephen Gray sidelined, youngster James McClean is also out with a virus, while centre-back Clive Delaney misses out through suspension.
More worryingly for Stephen Kenny was the news that striker Sammy Morrow is likely to be out for a least two months after breaking his right leg, during Thursday nights European success.
The former Hibs frontman will be a big loss to the Candystripes as they enter a crucial part of the season. Morrow will next week's trip to Bulgaria for Derry's third preliminary round against CSKA Sofia and with both the Setanta and FAI Cup campaigns also down for decision in the coming weeks, the likes of Tam McManus and youngster Aaron Nash are sure to be given more match time.
“I have been told I have to stay in plaster for six to eight weeks and then hopefully it will have healed properly,” declared Morrow.
“Unfortunately injuries are just part and parcel of football.
“We have a lot of big matches coming up and I'm obviously gutted I'm not playing, but I'll be aiming to get back in October.”
For manager Stephen Kenny he is hoping that Thursday night's match-winner Kevin Deery along with Barry Molloy can get better and better in the next few weeks.
“We probably rushed Kevin back a little bit. He was out for four weeks and played on Sunday against Bohemians,” said Kenny.
“He's probably not back to full fitness yet and Barry Molloy was out for eight weeks and has come back with three games in a week.
“We're still not at full throttle yet and we looked a little leggy at times, but hopefully the more matches they get under their belt the better it will be for them.”
The Dubliner also wants his players to get back winning ways in the league, as they have dropped a massive 10 points behind league leaders Bohemians and have also fallen into fourth place in the table.
In their last three games City have suffered a trio of 1-0 defeats to Dundalk, Drogheda United and Bohs, nevertheless Kenny still remains upbeat that his side can get back in the title race.
“If we win on Sunday, we'll go ahead of Cork again and if we can win our next two matches, we'll probably go back into second place again,” he said.
