Portadown future in doubt with no board deal

Portadown are due to kick-off the new Irish League season away to Donegal Celtic today with uncertainty still surrounding the future of the club.

And the Shamrock Park outfit is now facing a tight deadline to meet Irish FA demands regarding the running of its business.

Shareholders gathered at a meeting last night where it was hoped that a new board would be elected, with Turkish-born businessman Yalcin Cubuk as the chairman.

Cubuk is expected to bring some much needed financial backing to the Ports as well as the possibility of a link with Galatasaray — a club where he has close contacts — if he is elected.

The meeting — probably the most important meeting in the history of the club — broke up without an agreement on a way forward being reached.

The failure to re-structure the board of directors has now placed the Ports in a delicate position as the new season begins.

With no fully functioning board in place the club is at risk of falling foul of the authorities if their administrative problems aren’t ironed out swiftly.

It is understood that the Irish FA have informed the Ports that a list of directors must be lodged at their Windsor Avenue headquarters by Monday.

Today’s Carling Premiership fixtures: Cliftonville v Carrick Rangers; Crusaders v Glentoran; Donegal Celtic v Portadown; Dungannon Swifts v Coleraine; Glenavon v Linfield; Lisburn Distillery v Ballymena United.
