Portadown sweep past Banbridge
Wednesday, 6 August 2008
It was another stroll in the park as Portadown swept Banbridge Town aside in their second sortie down in the Irish FA Championship.
After putting seven past Armagh City in Saturday’s opening game their 5-1 win over Colin Malone’s side last night adds up to 12 goals in their first couple of matches down among the dead men – and the gulf in class was as wide as the Grand Canyon.
Still, the Ports received a real scare on seven minutes when Banbridge bagged the opener through Aidan McVeigh after the number nine robbed defender Keith O'Hara and squeezed the ball home from an acute angle.
That really stung the home side into action and after Town goalkeeper David Wilton saved brilliantly from Tim Mouncey and Gary McCutcheon, Kevin Braniff slammed home a couple within five minutes.
The first was on the half-hour when he glided home a superb header from a Wesley Boyle corner and then he slid in for a second after a pass from McCutcheon.
The Ports third goal, five minutes before half-time, was the best of the bunch.
Impressive winger Andrew Sproule collected a loose ball 25 yards out and fairly lashed it into the top corner.
It was Sproule again on 62 minutes, but this one was something of a softie. He raced down the right and didn't quite connect but the ball sort of went through keeper Wilton to make it four.
The game died a death after that and it wasn't until six minutes from time that substitute Richard Lecky wrapped it up when he side-footed a well-placed effort from the edge of the box.

Portadonw were very fortunate. 5 lucky, breakaway goals. If they have that luck every week, they'll win the league but surely it's got to run out at some stage?!

'but the ball sort of went through keeper Wilton to make it four'
'fairly lashed it into'
Strange terminology displayed by a professional journalist.

Ports were awesome last with Andrew Sproule the pick of the bunch. Bumper crowd there do, well over 1000, great for a Championship match.
