Quinn targets further rise for Bangor
Friday, 10 October 2008
Marty Quinn last night boldly stated that there is more to come from his high-flying Bangor team.
The Seasiders are one of the form teams in the league, with only defending champions Linfield having a better record than their three wins and a draw from the last four league outings taking them to fourth in the table.
And with an opportunity to move to within a point of top spot — if other results were to go their way — Quinn and his men will be going all out to inflict another defeat on surprise strugglers Cliftonville tomorrow afternoon.
It shouldn’t really be a shock that Bangor are so far up the table given their reputation for the unexpected, starting when they were granted a spot in the IFA Premiership in the first place before the appointment of Quinn and the signing of the previously ‘retired’ Darren Lockhart.
“It is nice to be compared favourably with the top clubs,” said Quinn.
“We are back to winning ways now and picking up points where I had hoped we would when the fixtures came out.
“We went through a spell of losing four games in a row, but three of them were against the three teams who are above us in the league.
“Saturday is the end of the first phase of fixtures and having been through that four-game spell we will be much better prepared for those matches when they come around again in the second round.”
The problem that Quinn finds himself with as he prepares to take his team to Cliftonville’s temporary home at Donegal Celtic’s Suffolk Road venue is putting a team on the pitch.
He has been handed a serious selection headache due to injuries and suspensions at the back which is causing concern.
“I had to ask my reserve team manager John Bailie to play against Newry City on Tuesday night, that’s how bad things have got,” said Quinn.
“He won’t play on Saturday though as he has gone into hospital for a knee operation.
“Gary Fitzpatrick is injured, Dean Youle is suspended after being sent-off on Tuesday so from last Saturday’s back four I am left with just one fit player in Mark Gracey.”
