Swifts' form has to improve for survival: Robinson

Dixie Robinson is demanding a positive finish to the season even though Dungannon Swifts are now resigned to finishing bottom of the table.

Depending on results Dungannon’s fate could be sealed this weekend. Should Newry City and Bangor both win and Swifts fail to beat Ballymena then they will be confirmed as the division’s bottom side.

All eyes would then be on the IFA Championship and the three-way battle for the title between Loughgall, Portadown and Donegal Celtic.

If the Ports and DC both finish in the top two then Dungannon will be forced to contest a play-off to determine whether they stay in the division.

For a side which has not recorded a league win since late January, that is a scenario which everyone at Stangmore Park will be desperate to avoid.

However Robinson is planning for the worst and knows that Dungannon must hit some degree of form going into any play-off next month.

“It is looking a bit dodgy,” he conceded. “There is no doubt about that and we’re not going to kid anyone. We’re bottom because we deserve to be there.

“We have been poor all season but we now have three games and we are not going to be treating them as a formality. We need to be having a little bit of form so that we are ready if it does go to a play-off situation.

“It is still just one defeat in five games so we have to get the momentum back up again and if we can get something from the last three matches then it should stand us in good stead.”
