Down Area Winter Football League round-up, April 5

Premiership

3 Bangor OBs had their relegation to Division 1 confirmed after both Comber Star and Oakfield Breda picked up the required points needed to save them from the drop.

In the result of the day, Andrew Bassett’s Comber Star defeated Brentwood 3-2, while Mark Frizelle’s Oakfield Breda inflicted the same scoreline on Comber Young Men.

In the remaining game of a reduced Premiership fixture list, Castlereagh Colts appeared to have one eye on their upcoming cup semi-final, after they fell to a heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of Ravenhill Young Men.

Division 1

Andy Rendall’s Newtown Forest have rocketed to promotion favourites following a superb 11 match unbeaten run. Their latest fixture saw them see off Bangor YM III 4-2.

Danny Gourley will be disappointed that his Comber Rec III could not take any points off Abbey Villa III, with the claret and blue men’s 2-1 win keeping their own promotion prospects alive.

North Down continue to stutter their way to the league title, although their 2-2 draw against Bangor Swifts III’s keeps them eight points clear with a game in hand over the chasing pack.

Ballygowan inflicted more misery over 82 with a 12-0 win over the divisions bottom placed side, Ards Rangers III’s produced a superb performance to defeat 43 OB's 4-1, while Ballywalter III drew 2-2 with Agape.

Reserve Leagues

With no Division 2a fixtures this weekend, the focus switched to Division 2b and Comber Star II's continuing to fight for second position. Their 2-1 win over Stranmillis 37 OB II kept them six points behind North Down, but with only three games remaining, it seems they will be unlikely to catch the Newtownards side.

In the remaining fixture, Agape II’s ran out 2-1 winners against 8 OB II’s.

Tommy Murphy Memorial Shield

43 OB II pulled off a shock 2-0 win over Brentwood II in Group A of the Tommy Murphy, while Ravenhill YM II recorded an impressive 5-1 scoreline over Vision Athletic II.

In Group B North Down II won 3-2 against Castlereagh Colts II, while Group D saw Bangor Rangers IV hit Comber YM II for five.

Jigsaw Financial Billy Allen Memorial Shield

The Jigsaw Financial Billy Allen Memorial Shield semi-finals takes place this Wednesday night (April 9) at Billy Neill playing fields, with both kicking off at 6.15pm.

Greenwell Star will take on Willowfield Parish, while Castlereagh Colts face Moat Park Rangers.
