Thompson targeting a return to real form

Peter Thompson is hoping to start all over again for Stockport County when they kick off their League One campaign tomorrow afternoon.

The Hatters make the short trip to face Oldham, but the Northern Ireland striker is hoping to come a long way from last term when the end of his season was ruined by a collapsed lung.

The injury ruled him out of contention for club and country, but he is aiming to hit the ground running in a bid to impress new County boss Gary Ablett.

Competition for a starting place in attack could well be fierce for Thompson this season as Ablett contemplates bringing former England striker Michael Ricketts to Edgeley Park.

Jeff Hughes, who has been overlooked for an international call-up since Nigel Worthington took charge, begins his season with Bristol Rovers when they entertain Leyton Orient.

Steve Jones has already admitted that he is desperate to rescue his international career after leaving Premier League newcomers Burnley.

He has signed on at Walsall and will make his competitive debut for the Saddlers when they travel to face Brighton.

Paul McVeigh, who retired from international football, is back with Norwich City as they aim to get back into the Championship.

The Canaries start off their campaign in the third tier of English football at home to Colchester under boss Brian Gunn.
