Thousands attend launch of Milk Cup
Monday, 27 July 2009
Northern Ireland skipper Aaron Hughes turned back the clock last night.
The Fulham defender said he was overwhelmed by the reception from thousands of well-wishers as he led the parade of competing teams at the Milk Cup through Coleraine.
He played for the Boys’ Brigade at successive tournaments and was spotted by Newcastle United who eventually signed him.
“It is a wonderful event for young players. The welcome from the fans is something you never forget. I have a great affection for the Milk Cup because it helped launch my career in full-time football,” he said.
Meanwhile, defending Junior champions Everton know their Milk Cup challenge has risen in degrees of difficulty.
Ray Hall's boys beat Wolves in last year’s decider but Goodison Academy Education and welfare chief Mike Dickinson says: “The standard of this year’s entry is amazing.
“There is an impressive list, probably the best ever to be honest.”
