Unhappy Ferguson vows to do better

Ballymena United 1 Dungannon Swifts 2: The curtain came down on Ballymena United's season with a disappointing home defeat by Dungannon Swifts – although some would argue it effectively ended when Alan Davidson's spot-kick won the Co Antrim Shield final shoot-out against Linfield.

That was back in November and since then United have recorded just six league wins, three of them coming in the increasingly meaningless end of season split that is doing its best to kick a game that is already struggling to survive.

With less points than last season but a first trophy since Moses was in nappies creates an interesting question – was the campaign a success or failure?

"Disappointed as we are, we're four points off our target from last year and we want to get better than that. Is the trophy a softener or a cushioner? To a certain extent it is but we didn't kick on from that and should have," said United boss Glenn Ferguson.

"We rested on our laurels, not just the players, maybe us as well, for four, five or six weeks and that won't happen again. Will we win a trophy next season, who knows? But I can't see us getting beaten six, seven and eight next year."

For the Swifts survival is the real mark of success and Darren Murphy, who watched his side clinch victory with debut boy Ryan Devlin's winner five minutes from time after Johnny Taylor had cancelled out PJ Lavery's opener, was a happy man.
