We must fight for our lives, says David Jeffrey
Monday, 27 October 2008
Linfield manager David Jeffrey today told his players to fight for their lives ahead of tonight’s crunch match with Cliftonville at Solitude.
And in a message to all the club’s fans, Jeffrey stated that the team needs their support now more than ever.
The Blues have lost their last FOUR games and failed to score in every one.
It is the worst run for Linfield since 1997.
Another defeat for Jeffrey’s men would be unthinkable, though playing away to Cliftonville would not have been the fixture they would have chosen in their bid to end the dismal run.
What makes things worse for the Blues is that Glentoran are in superb form, leading the title race and looking forward to the final of the Setanta Sports Cup.
On the upside for Linfield, if they win their two league games in hand they can move joint top with their Big Two rivals.
Tonight’s match with the Reds is live on Sky television.
And if it is anything like last season’s clash at Solitude, played in front of the TV cameras, which ended 2-2, the viewers and spectators at Solitude are in for a thriller.
Jeffrey knows exactly what is needed from everyone in blue.
“Yes, this has been a disappointing period for us, but every team in the world goes through a time like this. I have no doubt we will come out the other side,” said Jeffrey today.
“Tonight’s match gives us a great opportunity to do that.
“Cliftonville are a quality side and will provide formidable opposition, but we are ready for the battle.
“The players know they must roll their sleeves up and fight for their lives.
“I would also urge our supporters to get behind the team and would add that the players need the fans more now than ever.
“I know our supporters will back us to the hilt at Solitude.
“There is going to be an excellent atmosphere, the game is going to be Sky television and to be honest with you I can’t wait to get started.
“In the past few years we have set incredible standards and when you lose a few games on the trot obviously people have questions.
“Now it is up to us to answer those questions.”
Jeffrey has not been helped by a severe injury list.
“We have quite a few players out but believe me those who are fit and playing this evening will be the most dtermined group of players you could wish to see.”
