Lionel Messi steered Barcelona to a 13th straight appearance in the Champions League knockout stages and at the same time sent Celtic crashing out of Europe.

Messi scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Parkhead as the Spanish team secured top spot in Group C due to Manchester City drawing at Borussia Moenchengladbach last night. Celtic will now finish rock bottom and so miss out on a possible Europa League place.

Celtic captain Scott Brown said: "It's not been our day but we've played really well and dug deep to show that we can compete in the Champions League. It's a learning curve but we've showed quality against a top quality team. Hopefully we'll be back next year."
