Gerard Pique could be in line for a surprise return to Manchester United after it was reported that the Barcelona defender is unhappy at the Nou Camp.

Former club United are the favourites to land the 29-year-old, with new manager Jose Mourinho eager to add another defender to his ranks as he continues to bolster his new squad at Old Trafford.

Pique, who came through the Manchester United academy as a youngster, left in 2008 and joined Barcelona where he established himself as one of the world's best centre-backs.

It is likely that United would have to ward off the challenge of cross-town rivals Manchester City who have also expressed an interest in bringing the Spaniard to the Premier League where he would reunite with former boss Pep Guardiola.

Meanwhile, Juan Mata has already been told that his time at United is coming to an end following Mourinho's appointment as the club's manager, according to reports emanating from Spain.

Mata's future at United has been in serious doubt since Mourinho's arrival last month, with the duo enduring a less than successful relationship at Chelsea before he was sold to United for £37.1m in January 2014. Everton and Villarreal are interested in the midfielder.
