Chelsea too good to return for Milk Cup

Tuesday, 26 July 2011

Last year's Junior Section winners Chelsea have become a victim of their own success!

The boys from Stamford Bridge strolled their way to Milk Cup glory last year, but have been unable to return to defend their title this time around.

That is because they have won through to the finals of the prestigious Nike tournament and have opted to stay in England in order to take part in that instead.

There is no such trouble with Premier Section champions Etoile Lusitana. The club from the African country of Senegal couldn't wait to come back to the north coast, and they faced another English Premier League side, Bolton Wanderers, in yesterday's opening group game.

Twelve months ago Etoile Lusitana defeated the young Trotters 2-1 in the Premier Section final. "It is a real feather in our cap to have a Premier League club so keen to return," tournament chairman Victor Leonard said of Bolton's desire to take part again.

You might have thought that ruling yourself out of the first two games of football's second most important international tournament with a shocking flash of irresponsibility was quite enough to focus the mind of the nation's most gifted player.

Billy on the Box: DD’s big pair puts on blue show in Bavaria

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
