Milk Cup: African princes clinging to crown
Wednesday, 27 July 2011
Last year’s Premier Section winners Etoile Lusitana are making a strong case for retaining the title.
The Senegalese outfit continue to move through the gears again in this year’s tournament and recorded a 3-0 win over Spanish outfit Aletico Del Pinto.
Carlos Embalo netted and Mamadou Sall scored his second and third goals of the tournament in the win at the Ballymena Showgrounds.
Manchester United were impressive in their 7-0 win against brave County Tyrone in front of a bumper crowd of more than 2,500 at the Coleraine Showgrounds.
The first goal of the game arrived three minutes when a slip from the unfortunate Daryl Magee allowed James Wilson a clear shot for his second of the tournament.
Seven minutes into the second period and it was two, this time coming from a Dale Maxwell slip.
Wilson picked up the ball and laid it off for strike partner Gyliano Van Velzen to slot the ball past Boggs.
Midfielder Joseph Rothwell added number three seven minutes later with a fabulous twist and turn inside the box before applying a simple finish.
With just seven minutes remaining Jack Barmby lashed number four and as the game moved into added time Rothwell added his second and United’s fifth with the goal of the game.
He glided past two defenders before unleashing a thunderbolt into the top right corner .
Kenji Gore and Mats Daehli added goals six and seven as Tyrone’s legs tired in stoppage time.
Tottenham were 2-1 winners over Fermanagh thanks to Kenneth McEvoy’s brace while Bolton beat Armagh 2-0 with goals from Luke Woodland and Georg Iliev.
Sitting pretty and with maximum points are County Antrim, after a 3-2 win over Hartlepool in Broughshane. Goals came courtesy of Peter Duffin and Jonny McMurray (2).
They will play Desportivo Brasil in Ballymoney tonight with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
Manager Danny Clarkin however refuses to get too far ahead of himself and admits he hasn’t even looked at their position in the league table.
“We know that the top four clubs will go through to the semi-finals, but we haven’t even looked at that yet,” Clarkin admits.
“At the minute we’re just taking it game by game and not thinking about anything else beyond game with Desportivo on Wednesday.
“We’ve done really well so far and that’s why we come to the Milk Cup to play teams from the likes of Brazil.”
