Milk Cup: Eltoile aiming to topple Manchester United
Premier Section
Thursday, 28 July 2011
The draw for the semi-finals of the Premier Section has thrown up two mouth-watering clashes in typical Milk Cup tradition.
Crowd-pulling Manchester United will face last year’s winners Eltoile, while in tonight’s other last four clash, the craft of Aspire Academy will take on the flair of Desportivo Brasil.
Winners on their first ever visit to the Milk Cup last year, Etoile Lusitana are making waves again.
They sailed into tonight’s semi-finals with a 1-0 win over County Down, courtesy of Lamine Ba’s solitary strike.
Coach Luis Norton de Matos said: “Before we arrived we thought it was going to be important to win our first three games.
“We saw the teams involved and felt a number of them were capable of winning three games.
“We knew we faced tough games and that has been the case, so we are happy to win our opening matches.
“For us to be through it is important, because we want to be playing some of the biggest clubs in the world.”
In a repeat of last year’s Slemish final Manchester United tackled Hartlepool and once again ran our clear winners.
Jack Rudge was on hand with a brace while Jack Barmby added his third goal of the tournament and Mats Daehli was also on target once more.
Finding the net hasn’t been a problem for fellow semi-finalists Aspire and they notched another five goals — bringing their tally to 13 for the week so far — against Kiwi side Otago.
Antrim’s chances of mixing it with the big boys evaporated whenever they lost 3-0 to a slick Desportivo Brazil side.
The biggest shock of Wednesday’s Premier Section came when Tottenham lost 2-1 to South Coast Strikers at the Ballymena Showgrounds, leaving the Spurs lads without a chance of making the last four draw.
County Tyrone had a stunning 7-0 win against Zamora FC, of Venezuela, showing that defeat to United less than 24 hours had not dented their confidence.
The toast of Tyrone was Jamie McGahan who netted four times, with a brace from Jamie Sproule adding to Gary Henderson’s strike.
Zamora’s woes were compounded by the sendings off of Jose Gabriel Casanova and Jose Roa.
Also racking up seven goals were Bolton Wanderers against Cherry Orchard in Castlerock.
It was also a good afternoon for County Armagh as Stuart Well and Niall Young’s double helped secure a 3-2 win over Bohemians in Ballymoney.
