Milk Cup: Everton in another decider after tense shoot-out
Friday, 29 July 2011
Everton will go in search of their third title in four years today when they take on Mexican side Cruz Azul in the Junior Section final.
The Toffees made it through a tense penalty shoot-out semi-final victory over Ipswich Town after a goalless 60 minutes was not enough to separate the sides.
In the other semi-final clash Cruz Azul were victorious against a strong FC Nordsjaelland side and were only separated by Octavio Castela’s goal.
It sets up an intriguing clash at the Ballymena Showgrounds today between a side experienced in making it this far in the competition and the Mexican outsiders Azul, yet to make an appearance in the final.
Elsewhere the prestigious Globe final will be an all-county affair between Tyrone and Armagh after they overcame their respective English counterparts.
The final was due to take place today at Roe Mill in Limavady.
Caolan Skelton’s solitary strike was enough to ensure a 1-0 win over Reading for Armagh, while Tyrone needed penalties to see of Brentford at the University in Coleraine.
Liam Donnelly headed Tyrone ahead before a fine solo run and finish from Mark McConnell doubled their advantage before half-time.
However Brentford came storming back after the break with Fabian Rowe’s double.
However it was Paul Kee’s Tyrone who triumphed in the dreaded penalty shoot-out, scoring all five and seeing Brentford’s fifth skied by Seika Jatta.
“It takes courage to step up and take a penalty and we saw five very courageous boys out there,” boss Kee said.
“We play Armagh now for the right to be fifth placed team which is a great achievement.”
Down and Londonderry meanwhile missed out on making the Vase final.
Swindon Town will meet AB Copenhagen in the Bowl final at Anderson Park.
