Milk Cup: Manchester United book shot at silverware
Friday, 29 July 2011
Manchester United were made to work all the way by Etoile Lusitana as they booked their place in the Premier Section final against Aspire Acadmey at the Ballymena Showgrounds last night.
It was a first half of few chances, Pape Assane Diagne had the first when he rose the highest at the back post, but headed over Jonathan Sutherland’s goal.
Diagne continued to look dangerous and came close to giving Etoile the lead on 27 minutes when he met Carlos Embalo’s free-kick, but could only divert it over the bar from five yards.
United finally made the breakthrough with just 10 minutes on the clock and it was Jack Barmby on hand with a simple finish — his fifth goal in four games.
Mats Daehli whipped in a cross from the right, which was met at the back post by Luke Hendrie.
Hendrie laid the ball across the face of goal, which gave Barmby the simple task of tapping home from just two yards out.
Aspire, meanwhile, had a much more comfortable route to the final with a 6-1 thrashing of Desportivo Brasil at the Riada Stadium in Ballymoney.
They led 2-1 at the break and went on to add four more goals in the second period.
Ibrahima Drame was the hat-trick hero on the night, with goals also from Hisham Awadh, Allasame Diallo and Samuel |Darko.
Tottenham Hotspur booked their place in the Globe final with an eventful 4-3 win over Dublin side Cherry Orchard.
Ruben Lamerias, Daniel Akindayiuni and Thomas Gardiner adding to an unfortunate own goal was enough for Spurs.
They will meet South Coast Strikers, who are finishing the week strongly, beating Bolton Wanderers 1-0, courtesy of Jared Hegardt’s goal.
Co Down continue to impress as they stormed into the Vase decider against Hartlepool United, courtesy of a 4-1 win over their Antrim rivals.
They showed their quality in the win over Antrim, with goals from Ryan McCready, Simon Hanna, Joe McKinney and Aaron Sils.
Down now face Hartlepool in the final, who beat Tyrone, with a goal apiece from Christopher Dodds and Steven Smith — and one from leading goalscorer Jamie McGahan.
Co Londonderry earned a place in the Bowl final after a 4-1 win on penalties over Armagh after the scores were tied 1-1 in normal time. They will now go on to face Bohemians in the final.
