Milk Cup: Mexicans turn up heat in Juniors
Wednesday, 27 July 2011
A little bit of Mexico came to the north coast yesterday in the Junior Section of the Milk Cup.
Mexican side Cruz Azul notched up their second win in as many days and for once the climate suited the central Americans.
Tuesday’s Junior section was played in glorious sunshine all along the north coast and it remains a tight division with no side having yet won by more than two goals.
Cruz ran out 2-1 winners over County Fermanagh thanks to goals from Andres Mellado and Rioger Solis, with Jamie Lee Fawcett replying for Fermanagh.
Another side with a 100% record is Ipswich Town, who beat Antrim thanks to goals from Ted Bishop and Byron Lawrence.
Town boss Sammy Morgan said: “We’re pleased with two wins obviously and they have been two hard games and County Antrim gave us a real test.
“We play Queen of South on Wednesday and they haven’t won a game yet, but you just never know what you’re going to get from youngsters! It’s shaping up well, with four teams on six points, but there are obviously teams just outside that waiting on some of the four to slip up.”
Also having won two games out of two is Danish outfit FC Nordsjaelland who triumphed in the Scandanavian derby with Norwegians, Revo Express.
One County in with a shout of making tonight’s semi-final draw is Down after their 2-0 win over Hapoel Haifa in Coleraine, with goals from Josh Doherty and Nicholas Turkington.
It was a poignant victory for the Down boys who were missing their manager Paul Ritchie, who left the tournament following the death of his father on Monday evening. Coach Kyle Spiers stepped in to lead the team to victory and after the Haifa win dedicated it to their absent gaffer.
“Paul’s father has been ill for some time and unfortunately the news was inevitable, but the win was very fitting for him,” he said.
“The boys did very well and we created a good number of chances outside the goals we scored.
“We’ll see how other results go, but we take on Watford knowing we have a chance to make the last four on Wednesday.
“When the boys arrive for the parade on the Sunday and play their first match on the Monday they put a lot of effort into those two events. As coaches it’s our jobs to remind them they have another four games after that.”
It was a disappointing day for Tyrone and Londonderry who both lost 2-0, to favourites Everton and Reading respectively.
