Norman Whiteside urges Milk Cup hopefuls to dare to dream

Legend Norman Whiteside urged this year's young Milk Cup hopefuls to follow his example and live the dream as he officially declared the world famous youth tournament underway.

The former Manchester United and Northern Ireland hero wowed a packed Coleraine Showgrounds, drenched in sunshine for last night's opening ceremony.

Whiteside, now 46, broke Pele's record as the youngest player to appear in World Cup finals when he played in Spain back in 1982, aged 17 years and 41 days.

"You are never to young to dream about success in football," he told the 1,000 young players assembled on the pitch.

"I got to live the dream from a very young age and you can too but it takes hard work and dedication," he also stressed.

A total of 48 teams from 17 countries go into action from today, battling to reach the finals on Friday in Ballymena.

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
