Toffees stick to the semi-final path
Tuesday, 26 July 2011
Everton are on course for a place in the Milk Cup semi-finals after yesterday's slender opening day win in Coleraine.
The boys from Goodison Park were worthy winners against Queen of the South, but it was only Kyle Scarisbrick's second-half header which separated the sides.
The Toffees were tournament winners in 2008 and 2009 and are aiming to make it three successes in four years - especially with last year's winners Chelsea not making the trip across.
"We have a young squad, a lot of boys born in 1997, but we've got some good players with us we feel," boss Sean Lundon said.
"We love coming here, it tells us a lot about the players.
"It's all about their development, they learn how to win and how to win in tough matches. We talk about development and learning how to win is big part of that."
The biggest winners on the opening day of the Junior Section were Tyrone, as they defeated neighbours Fermangah 3-1 in Ballymoney.
Goals from Conal Crawford, Robbie McDaid and Eoin Teague sealed the win, with Stuart Rainey replying for Fermanagh, who also had Jamie Amos sent-off.
Norwegian outfit Revo Express, coached by Englishman Ryan McKnight, left the turmoil of the bomb attack and shootings of Olso to arrive at the tournament on Saturday.
They lost 1-0 in their opening match against Plymouth Argyle and have a Scandinavian derby to look forward to this afternoon again FC Nordsjaelland.
"I thought the Plymouth game was a really even one, although I'm not saying Plymouth didn't deserve to win," McKnight said.
"We arrived in Northern Ireland on Saturday and in many ways it was good for the boys to leave the country so soon after the attacks happened.
"We left very, very early on the Saturday morning and I think the parents of the boys were grateful for that.
"I have to say though, the players have taken it on very well and they know they not only represent themselves and their families this week, but also a wounded nation."
Elsewhere, Antrim and Armagh played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in Portstewart with goals from Rory Hale and Stuart Marshall for Antrim and Ciaran Corey and Brett McKinney replying for Armagh.
That was the scoreline for the first game of the day between Dundalk and Down - George Gray and James Milligan on target for Down.
